Bridgestone has unveiled its POTENZA GEN4 racing tyres ahead of becoming Formula E’s sole tyre supplier from the 2026/27 season. The FIA confirmed the appointment in a statement dated 1 October 2026, following a launch event in Rome.
The range includes an all-weather tyre and a separate heavy-wet specification called POTENZA GEN4 for TYPHOON TYRE. The FIA describes the tyres as developed for the torque and performance demands of the new GEN4 electric racing car.
Materials claims require context
Bridgestone reports a 65% share of recycled and renewable materials. Its qualification states that the figure includes resources certified under ISCC PLUS using a mass-balance chain-of-custody approach. The FIA also reports the 65% figure, but that announcement is not an independent lifecycle assessment or a comparative road-tyre test.
The distinction is useful for industry readers evaluating sustainability claims: a material-content percentage, a certification method and whole-life environmental performance answer different questions.
Why South African tyre businesses may follow it
The programme provides an international case study in the demands that electric powertrains place on tyre development and in how manufacturers describe alternative materials. Those themes can inform questions to suppliers about locally available products, including their approved applications and supporting test evidence.
Neither announcement establishes a South African retail launch, local production programme or a measured benefit for tyres sold here. Motorsport development should therefore be treated as a technology signal, rather than proof of a road-product performance advantage.
